The Daily Cut: Ozzy Osbourne “I Don’t Know”

Ozzy Osbourne: “I Don’t Know”

ALBUM: Blizzard of Ozz

YEAR:  1980

WRITERS: Ozzy Osbourne, Randy Rhoads and Bob Daisley

The lead-off track on Blizzard of Ozz wasn’t a single, but has been played on rock radio ever since its release.

“I Don’t Know” was one of the first songs Ozzy Osbourne wrote after leaving Black Sabbath to become a solo artist. He recalls writing it with his bassist Bob Daisley and his new American guitarist, Randy Rhoads.  “We were writing that in a farmhouse in Wales and Randy had just joined the band and he’d got this riff [sings it]. I just come up with this melody line and Bob and I sat down and write the lyrics. That was the initial start of the Ozzy thing, and I knew at the time that I had something there, y’know. You can feel it. And I’ll always remember when Randy Rhoads got the guitar solo my hair stood up on the back of my hand and I thought, ‘That’s got to be a winner!’”

Ozzy Osbourne celebrates his 67th birthday today (December 3rd).
