Nazareth: “Love Hurts”

ALBUM: Hair of the Dog

YEAR:  1975

WRITER: Boudleaux Bryant

Peaked at number-eight on the Billboard Hot 100.

Nazareth singer Dan McCafferty says he’s been amazed over the years by how many people think “Love Hurts” is an original of theirs. In fact, it’s been done so many times that Nazareth never thought it would be an important song for them when they recorded it. “We were the 43rd recorded version of that. There were 42 recorded versions of that done by well, you had Roy Orbison, you had The Everly Brothers, obviously. Dozens of people. Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris did it on the Grievous Angel album – that’s the one that we liked, actually. That’s the one that we used to sing all the time. That’s why we covered it. So it’s probably one of the most recorded songs that’s been around. And when we did it, we did it to use as a B-side.”

Original Nazareth guitarist Manny Charlton, who plays on “Love Hurts,” turns 75 years old today (July 25th).
