Robert Griffin III won’t have 2 of his primary targets Friday night for the preseason opener at Green Bay, and he may be down a third.

Veteran Andrew Hawkins and rookie Corey Coleman were ruled out for the game by head coach Hue Jackson Wednesday.

“Those guys, we’re going to make sure that they’re exactly where they need to be,” Jackson said.

Meanwhile Terrelle Pryor, who has burst up the depth chart through the first 2 weeks of camp, strained his right calf during Wednesday’s practice and was pulled from work by Jackson.

“I think Terrelle will be fine,” Jackson said. “He was practicing and I made a decision to take him out. He wanted to stay out there. My job is to make sure that our players are OK, but I think he’ll be fine, till the doctors tell me so will I really know.

“He was laboring a little bit. I can tell. He’s willing to fight through it because guys want to have those opportunities that they’re getting, but at the same time, I have to be smart enough to tell a guy, ‘Hey, we need to back you down.’”

The absence of Coleman and Hawkins means that Taylor Gabriel and Marlon Moore – both are on the bubble – should get an extended look and rookies Ricardo Louis, Rashard Higgins and Jordan Payton will probably get extra reps.

Up Off PUP – Rookie tight end Seth DeValve made his first appearance of camp Wednesday after being activated from the PUP list due to a hamstring injury.

DeValve sustained the injury while running a route during minicamp in June and has been rehabbing ever since.

“It’s very hard to watch,” DeValve said. “Unfortunately, I’ve been a spectator for much of my time here so far. It’s something you gotta be patient with. A hamstring injury is not something you can tough through like some injuries you can wrap up and get back out there. [With a] hamstring you’ll just keep re-injuring it if you try to do that so I’ve had to be patient.

“It’s been very difficult, very frustrating at times watching instead of playing but my time will come.”

The Browns selected DeValve in the fourth round – No. 138 overall – because of his size and athleticism, something Jackson is looking forward to seeing on the field soon.

“If he’s healthy, he’s a tremendous athlete,” Jackson said. “He has a chance, just like anybody else. I think he’ll hopefully get back out here pretty soon so that we can evaluate him. We haven’t seen much of him. He needs to be out there with his teammates practicing.”

While rehabbing DeValve spent as much time studying the playbook and watching film.

“It is a little bit like going to school,” DeValve said. “We meet longer than we practice. Your notebook is open. Your playbook or textbook is open. Notes are on the screen. You’re looking at the screen and taking notes. It’s very much like going to school – lots of detail.

“The playbook is thicker than most textbooks.”

Football Life – Browns Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown will be one of the 12 former players and coaches featured in the sixth season of NFL Network’s ‘A Football Life’ the network announced Wednesday.

The episode is scheduled to premiere Thursday Nov. 10 following the Browns and Ravens game in Baltimore which will also air on NFL Network.

Holy War – The annual meeting between Cleveland High School football powerhouses St. Ignatius and St. Edward will be played at First Energy Stadium the team and schools announced.

The two will face off on Saturday Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. The Browns will host the New York Jets the following day in week 8.

Roll Call – WR Andrew Hawkins (hamstring), WR Corey Coleman (hamstring), WR Josh Gordon (quadriceps), CB Trey Caldwell (hamstring), FB Malcolm Johnson (concussion), DL Nile Lawrence-Stample (undisclosed) worked with trainers and did not practice.

WR Terrelle Pryor (calf) left practice early.

Up Next – Thursday is a travel day; preseason opener Friday night at Green Bay.
