Creedence Clearwater Revival: “I Put a Spell on You”

ALBUM: Creedence Clearwater Revival

YEAR: 1968

WRITERS: Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Herb Slotkin

Creedence Clearwater Revival’s cover of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put a Spell on You” was the lead-off track of its debut album, its second single to chart and a song the band played at Woodstock on this day (August 17th) in 1969. Frontman John Fogerty remains a big fan of this classic cut. “Screamin’ Jay is the virtual owner of that song, but I sure have a good time singing it. I mean, I still really enjoy that song. That’s not something everyone can always say about everything they do, but in a sense that song is something I really get to show off on, and I really enjoy doing that.”

CCR performed a set that included “I Put a Spell on You” at Woodstock on August 17th, 1969.
