Browns center Cameron Erving left Wednesday’s joint practice with the Buccaneers in Tampa, Florida early due to an ankle injury.

Erving has had an inconsistent camp and preseason and is in need of as many reps and snaps as he can get. He’s had several snaps that have been off the mark, including last Friday night against the Falcons that went 25 yards over quarterback Robert Griffin III’s head and his blocking ability up front has also been questioned.

Head coach Hue Jackson did not seem concerned with Erving’s latest setback following the practice.

“He just had his ankle, sprained it a little bit,” Jackson told reporters. “I just wanted to get him out of there so he’ll have a chance to play on Friday. I think he’ll be fine.”

When asked if Erving is expected to play Friday night in what is considered the dress rehearsal for the regular season Jackson responded, “Oh, yeah, I think so.”

Garth Gerhart took the first team snaps in place of Erving and Mike Matthews was bumped up to the second team for the remainder of the practice.
