CBGB Plans On Reopening Reeaaal Soon

Listen up folks, some rumors are worth the spreadin’!

Especially this tasty morsel about the iconic music club CBGB reopening, which closed on October 15, 2006 after lengthy disputes over back rent between owner Hilly Kristal and the Bowery Residents’ Committee.

We happen to know a guy (Gothamist) who has inside info from another guy (Don’t know ‘em) that there are plans to reopen CBGB in a new space somewhere in Manhattan, not 315 Bowery at Bleecker Street, where the club resided for over thirty years.

Don’t cry “BLASPHEMY!” just yet. Nearly every poster, chair, table, and screw that was scattered throughout the club is currently in storage in a 3,000-square-foot space in Williamsburg, which makes replicating the original venue pretty easy.

The bar is even being held in a trailer in Connecticut, so that piece of gum you stuck under it in ’78 when you went to see The Police could still be there.

The bar would obviously be under new ownership, since Hilly Kristal passed away on August 28, 2007 from complications of lung cancer at the age of seventy-five.

Will reopening CBGB in another location fill the void left by its closing?

One-Hit Wonders: Big Country And “In A Big Country”

Though they had a string of hits in the UK over the course of more than 15 years, Big Country found only one hit in the US…and we all know which one that is.

“In a Big Country” was the third single by Big Country released by Mercury Records in the US. Taken from their debut album, The Crossing, the song was the collaboration of band members Stuart Adamson, Mark Brzezicki, Tony Butler and Bruce Watson and produced by U2 knob-turner Steve Lillywhite.

Released in May 1983, the song made a slow, steady 6-month climb up the charts, peaking at #17 on the pop chart in December (and #3 on the rock charts).

Unlike many One-Hit Wonders who like to believe otherwise, frontman Stuart Adamson is quite alright fitting into that category. “If we’re known for nothing more than just that one song,” he told VH-1, “I’d be pretty happy with that.”

A Boy and His Snake

Yup, a real live, large python that this cute little boy has befriended. Take a look and be amazed. And sort of freak out.

Why am I posting about these things that make me have nightmares? Because I happen to bump into a new PBS show called Inside Nature’s Giants, and was completely and totally fascinated as the scientists talked about the python problem in Florida, talked about their evolution, and then their anatomy. What a gorgeous, amazing, living miracle. Not that I’d want one for a pet, behind that really thick glass at the zoo or on television is fine for me. And as a side note, I”m on the snake’s side, so not fair that they are being killed in Florida. I mean I get it, they can be dangerous, but the snakes didn’t buy a ticket, and board a boat to Florida. Most of them are the sad victims of overzealous owners who realize that perhaps a huge python is not the best animal to keep as a pet.

World’s Worst Songs: Eddie Murphy’s “Party All the Time”

Everybody who loves music also hates music — certain specific examples of it, anyhow. This feature is about those songs: the World’s Worst Songs.

When choosing the World’s Worst Songs, it doesn’t seem fair to bash records that were doomed from the start. When Britney Spears‘ ex-husband Kevin Federline made his vanity record a few years back, nobody was expecting the second coming of Blood on the Tracks. It sucked, as we knew it would.

When artists of major reputation step in it, that’s noteworthy. Also noteworthy: when artists of major reputation in fields other than music try music and fail spectacularly. Exhibit A: “Party All the Time” by Eddie Murphy.

By 1985, Eddie Murphy could do no wrong. After a career-making stretch on Saturday Night Live, he starred in a string of hit movies in 1982 and 1983. Beverly Hills Cop came out in December 1984 and would rule the box office and the pop charts for the next year. So when he wanted to make an R&B album, who would say no?

Somebody should have. How Could It Be got terrible reviews, even as “Party All the Time” rose to #2 on the Hot 100 in January 1986. Murphy proved to be not much of a singer, and whatever groove “Party All the Time” works up is more accountable to producer and guest star Rick James than it is to Murphy. In the video, he looks uncomfortable, as if he knows he doesn’t belong where he is.

I was program director of a top 40 station in January 1986, and we played the hell out of “Party All the Time.” It’s one of the many things I will have to answer for on Judgment Day.

Rock Flashback: New Riders of the Purple Sage

If the Grateful Dead were a tree, its offshoots would be many. One that’s occasionally overlooked is New Riders of the Purple Sage.

The New Riders originally featured Dead members Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, and Mickey Hart. The group was intended as an outlet for the trio’s interest in country rock. The other members in the band’s original lineup, David Nelson and John Dawson, were old San Francisco friends of the Dead.

Dawson and Nelson would remain constants in the band for years to come; the lineup around them would shift quite a bit, although drummer Spencer Dryden, formerly of the Jefferson Airplane, was a member for 10 years.

The New Riders’ first album was released in 1971. The band frequently opened for the Dead, and in December 1971, played a live radio concert with the Dead broadcast over WNEW-FM. But it is the New Riders’ third album for which they are best known. Although their second album, Powerglide, charted higher, The Adventures of Panama Red was their best seller — and if you know a single New Riders song, it’s probably “Panama Red.”

We heard “Glendale Train” from the band’s debut album on the radio the other day — the only NRPS album to feature Jerry Garcia in a starring role — and we like it.

Troggs Singer Reg Presley Battling Lung Cancer, Announces Retirement

Reg Presley, the 70-year-old lead singer of The Troggs, has announced that he is undergoing chemotherapy for lung cancer and he is retiring from the band. Presley suffered a stroke in 2010 and according to Spinner is believed to have had another stroke in 2011. His hospitalization led to the discovery of the cancer.

His letter was posted on My-generation.org.uk/Troggs:

“As you all know I was taken ill whilst doing a gig in Germany in December. During my stay in hospital tests showed that in fact I have lung cancer. I am receiving chemotherapy treatment and at the moment not feeling too bad.

However I’ve had to call time on The Troggs and retire. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the cards and calls and for your love, loyalty and support over the years.

A big thank you to Jackie for running the fan club and keeping you all up to speed, and a huge and special thank you to Chris, Pete and Dave.

I shall miss you all.”

Roxy Music Set To Release 12-Disc Career-Spanning Box Set

Photos: Bryan FerryRoxy Music plans on celebrating their 40th anniversary in a big way. Virgin Records is set to release a career spanning box set, Roxy Music: The Complete Studio Recordings 1972-1982, on April 2. The collection will include eight CDs and four DVDs with “high-resolution audio.”

The albums set to be re-released are: Roxy Music, 1972; For Your Pleasure and Stranded, 1973; Country Life, 1974; Siren, 1975; Manifesto, 1979; Flesh and Blood, 1980; and Avalon, 1982. Bonus material, non-album singles, B-sides, and remixes will also be included in this mega set.
